Still going to the bookshop for latest Peppa Pig? You might want to download it instead. A study conducted by researchers from the University of South Dakota and the University of Toronto compared the impact of e-books and traditional print books on toddler learning.
The study involved 102 toddlers aged 17 to 26 months and their parents. The toddlers were randomly assigned to read either two e-books or two print books with identical content.
The researchers found that toddlers who were read e-books showed greater attention, engagement, and participation compared to those who were read print books. However, the increased engagement with e-books did not necessarily lead to increased learning.
The study suggests that while e-books may capture toddlers’ attention more effectively, the specific features of the books can influence their learning outcomes.
